Hello Everyone,

I am trying to research the Leyland Buffalo (the model produced between 1955-1960). I was surprized to find out you had them in Spain, and even more to see at least two survived, because this was not a successful Leyland model. From what I found out, the problem was that the English (as usual) did not develop the model properly, so that in the end what should have represented competition to the big USA trucks did not fulfil its potential. One of the problems was that the gear box ratios were wrong (6 speed at first and only later ZF gear box with 12 speeds). There might have been reliability issues with the engine (it was powerful enough for the time - 230CV was not bad for 1955, and later there was a 300CV version which was used only in railcars).

It seems that apart from Spain, they were mainly exported to Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. We (in Israel) had one example only. As you can see from the pictures, they all had different cabines. The first one is the lone Israeli Buffalo (I got the picture from srulik500, an Israeli truck driver friend of mine who works for the same company which owned the Buffalo at the time):

Imagen

The next one is of an Australian Bufallo. The truck belongs to Bill Baskett of Queensland - see the completely different cabine (picture originally from BigLorryBlog, http://www.roadtransport.com/blogs/big-lorry-blog/ ):

Imagen

I made a post on this in the Australian HCVC forum ( http://hcvc.com.au/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1256484174 ) - I used Isidoro's picture of the Papa Ali Bufallos and another one which I cannot find again - I mentioned the origin of the photos and linked to the forum, so I hope nobody will get angry with me (I tried to read the rules before but it is very difficult for me, because I do not speak Spanish)! Isidoro - I will of course make corrections if you want.

My questions, which I hope forum members will be able to answer, are:

- What was the reputation of the Buffalo in Spain?
- What specifications did they have - I saw one had Trilex wheels, very unusual for Leylands and never seen on "English Empire" Buffalos?
- How many were imported?
- How many survive?
- Any news on the rebuild of the Papa Ali Buffalos?
- Who made the cabines (in my opinion, the style is superb, the Spanish Buffalos are the best looking of them all)?
- Lastly, does any of the South American forum members know if the model was exported to that continent?

Advance thanks for any answers - sorry about so many qustions!

Best regards,

T

PS: Spanish translation by Google below.

Saludos cordiales,

T

Hola Tatra y bienvenido al foro.

Yo tambien utilizo un traductor on line. Pido disculpas.

Hello Tatra and welcome to the forum.

I also use a translator on line. I ask for excuses.

To begin I say to you, that I can stand that you have used my photo for this Australian web. If in addition, my photo has pleased, better much.

Personally, I like much Leyland's history. I have seen information in Internet and asked many persons, and it is
difficult to know exactly Leyland's history in Spain. Very strange, because the brand had influence great in Spain in 50's and 60's. There were sold many trucks (especially Beaver, Comet and Hippo) and also buses, motor-coaches and up to chassis. The own Leyland was linked to Pegaso, sharing the network of official service. Of the model Buffalo, I do not believe that many units were sold in Spain. What is clear, is that in Spain many people like the history of the Leyland, in fact next spring I have foreseen to receive to an expert English of the topic and that was contacted by me. Unlike the Beaver, Hippo or Comet, I have not managed to take more photos of the model Buffalo, apart from the Papa Ali´s trucks, though for your happiness friend Tatra, I will say to you that in Cartagena (my city), there was another specimen more. It was a telescopic crane and belonging to the most ancient and veteran company of cranes of Cartagena (almost fifty years). Precisely, the photo of my avatar is of another truck of this company, so called "Gruas Polisol ".

I am not capable of answering to all the questions that you do, but will do everything what could. The fact that some Leyland were taking rims " type trilex ", it was necessary to to that the axes of the trucks were changing throughout the years. Manufacturers of axes like Axemad or Mintegui, were constructing them, to mount them in different brands of trucks, between them Leyland. To the Leyland in Spain, also they were changed by the engine (especially Pegaso and Barreiros), when the original Leyland was damaged seriously.

Regards from Cartagena. :39:

Hello Isidoro,

Many thanks for your reply. First, I would like to say that the information you provided is already very interesting - in particular, I can now add the Gruas Polisol Buffalo to the list! From what you write, can I assume that this Buffalo has been scrapped?

What you say about the artillery type wheels makes sense - I did not know Mintegui was a producer of axles and wheels (Axemad I heard of and they are of course still in business). The picture I linked to is from what looks like a show where Mintegui had an exhibition stand, so probably the Buffalo was used to demonstrate what they could do. The Buffalo on the Mintegui stand is also interesting because of the non-standard bumper and where the air filter is positioned. I have to say it looks brand new so possibly the modifications were only limited to artillery wheels?

By the way, in the picture of the Papa Ali Buffalos, I think one can see that the Leyland 900 engine was retained. I very much hope they will restore them like they did with their Hippo!

If the Englishman you mentioned was Martin Phippard, you may be interested to know he visited Israel last week - I know he is looking for information about the Israeli made Leylands but, similarly to Spain, it is not so easy to gather information about them because the factory no longer exists.

Again, thanks for the information. Spanish Google translation below.

Kind regards,

T

Hola Isidoro,

T

Hello Francisco Ortiz,

what you say is very interesting - this will be the first Buffalo having a 6X2 configuration I have heard about. As far as I know, they were all 6x4 (long wheel base or short). There was a rumor in Israel of a 4X2 (!) Buffalo but in the end this was revealed to be no more than a regular Hippo (of which there were many in Israel).

If you have any information about the Leyland Buffalos in Spain, I will be greatful to hear it.

Best regards,

T

Hola Francisco Ortiz,

Saludos cordiales,

T

Hello Juan Fresneda,

If I understand you correctly, what you say is that because Leyland was so prestigious in Spain in that time, people modified other chassis with Leyland cavina + snout?

Below is a picture posted on this forum of what looks like a Buffalo, but the artillery wheels and the fuel tank shout Mack NR...

So maybe this is an example of such modification?

Best wishes,

Tatra

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I like that an issue like this, be accepted. Without being anything Leyland expert, I like everything that is related to the mark.

I do not know if the Buffalo Polisol Crane, was or was not 6x2. We shall see later. Regarding the change of axles, engines or cabs, I sincerely believe that anything is possible. The changes of axes, was common. The Beaver is the front axle with wheel "spider" of Mintegui.

Moreover, it was customary to add a third axis. In this case, we see a third axis "Acerbi" with Barreiros logo belonging to another Beaver. The Leyland admitted many combinations, with major contemporary Spanish brands.

It seems that Spain came to Beaver chassis and super super Hippo. Presumably it would also answer the Buffalo. Master Gines body told me that Gozalbo (Castellón) were made cabinets for Buffalos. It is therefore not surprising that there is such a variety of cabins for the same truck.

Exciting story of Leyland in Spain.

Greatings from Cartagena :39:

Si me he equivocado me pueden corregir
Saludos
